Anyone know of a good LAMP distribution? I looked at slampp, and it looks ok, but i really dont need xwindows or anything i just want a few servers (web, ssh, ftp, svn, mysql) for my own personal use (it wouldnt even be connected to the internet, not in the near future anyway) and I'm not like afraid of the Linux commandline or anything. Anyone have experience with minimalist distros that would fit this need want? I have old pc's around, but dont have the room for like an extra monitor for it or something so id be controlling it via ssh ideally.

Debian would be a great choice. After a few installation questions you can choose which collections of software you want to install. So you can choose not to install the "Desktop environment" and only install servers and other standard stuff. The whole setup is under 10 GB.

I ordered a copy of "Ubuntu Server Edition" . I don't really care for Ubuntu as a desktop distro, but as a server it should be fine. Or at least that's what I'm hoping.

I got my copy of Ubuntu Server edition 8.10 in the mail the other day. It runs decently on minimal hardware (500mhz celeron, maybe 128 megs ram) and seems to function well out of the box. Right now though I'm in a "chicken or egg" scenario, because i need gcc and the kernel source and headers to build the driver for my dialup modem (lucent/agere, ive had very good luck with those under linux) so i can download and install other packages... so that kindof stinks. Maybe if i get some time on a highspeed network in the future i could plug right in and just use apt-get otherwise its a lot of extra work. Anyway ya if you're looking for a minimal lamp or other linux server, check out ubuntu server they will even send you free disk(s). Grin
